Serving other Employees!

January 31st, 2011 by admin in Uncategorized

I was out last night and came across something that really bothered me…. Why does a bartender give better service to off duty employees then to guest? I was in a bar/restaurant in Los Angeles (No names needed) and there were about 4 or 5 off duty employees sitting at the bar. I understand they all know each other and this and that. But when I see the bartender serving them better, and when I say better, they never had an empty drink, ashtrays always emptied, engaged in more conversation, just overall more attentive.

I went to this place on a Sunday, by myself because I was bored. A good bartender would of pulled me into the conversation and not saying to be more attentive to me, but shout at least be equal. I sat three times with an empty drink exceeding 5 minutes before this bartender offered another. I started chewing on the ice. At this bar you are able to comp shots, I saw her comping shots for the employees but did not offer me one. Service like this makes me not want to go back, I am sure the owner/manager would prefer the bartender taking care of an actual patron of the bar then chatting away with off duty employees!

As you can see there is a little anger here, but when I am spending my money at a place, I expect to be treated just as well as everyone else at the bar, friend/employee or no.

As anyone else come across something similar to my experience?

Double check your orders!

January 25th, 2011 by admin in Job Seekers

As I been visiting many types of restaurants in many different areas, I been seeing one common issue! Double check your orders!!! There is no exception, from a coffee shop to fine dinning. There is nothing wrong with repeating the order to the guest. There are two major reason to do this, one is obviously to make sure the guest get the meal they expected. Nothing worse then being hungry expecting this great meal, then it arrives and it is not what you expected. The you are in that awkward situation of eating the meal or sending it back and have to wait for it to be made again. The second, is the cost may go up for customers to cover the mistakes that are being thrown away.

As a server a situation can cause a direct reflection of your tip and may of cost the restaurant a repeat customer. With repeating the order, you are also starting a report with the guest. Do not be scared of the  guest, just think how you like to be treated when you are being served.

If you do make a mistake on the order, do not worry it is not the end of the world. First apologize to the guest, offer to get a new one. If they accept or decline, get a manager. Make sure the manager stops by the table, depending on the procedures for the restaurants, try to get that meal comped or bring a dessert out on the house. The restaurant industry is one of very few industries that can fix problems right as they happen! Use that your advantage and have the guest leave with a smile on their face and want to come back!

Culinary Schools

January 25th, 2011 by admin in Hiring Restaurant, Job Seekers

We want your opinion on Culinary Schools? Do they actually help you achieve your goals and career path or is it just waisted money? When talking to restaurant employers, we seem to have mixed reactions on whether they look at a culinary degree as a positive or negative.

If we are going to give any suggestions, we would say do you your research! Make sure the culinary school you want to apply has all the classes and resources you may need to further your career!
